Learn About Our Educational Standards

We are helping bring transparency and accountability to practitioners in the trauma space.

Why Are We Advocating For Educational Standards?

Trauma practice is largely unregulated. In one sense, this is positive, as it allows for a diverse practitioner base to meet the growing shortage of mental health practitioners. However, it can also induce issues around transparency and accountability for practitioners who practice outside of a safe, reasonable scope. Our educational standards set transparent educational tracks for institutions and students to follow. This ultimately benefits clients, bringing transparency and standards to trauma care.

Our Professional Designations:

Trauma Or Somatic Coach

Primary Role:

The role of a trauma coach is to support a client as they navigate low-intesity trauma in a non-therapeutic context. Coaches should refrain from administering specific therapeutic modalities, and rather guide clients in their exploration of their trauma by giving suggested resources and accountability support.

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum 50 hours of education.

  • Minimum 10 hours of supervised practice.

Trauma Or Somatic Practitioner

Primary Role:

The role of a trauma practitioner is to support clients in deeper exploration of moderate levels of trauma. Trauma practitioners should refrain from treating severe trauma cases, and administer body-based trauma modalities that refrain from psychotherapy.

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum 125 hours of education.

  • Minimum 20 hours of supervised practice.

Trauma & Somatic Therapist

Primary Role:

The role of a trauma therapist is to support clients in deep and gradual exploration of moderate to severe trauma and ensure a safe, gradual approach to care.

Educational Requirements:

*Active therapy or counseling license + minimum 25 hours of additional training in trauma-specific care.

*We do not in any way license or help our students obtain licenses for mental health practice in any state, or permit students to perform mental health services. We are a professional organization that seeks to establish professional regulation for practitioners practicing outside the scope of mental health licenses.
